Título

Vulnerability of the Brazilian population to climate change: A case study of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) in association with the spatial distribution of Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani, in Brazil

Introdução

Infectious diseases transmitted by vectors are exceptionally vulnerable to climate change, as they depend on close relationships between microecological conditions, different species of parasites, vectors and hosts that interact in complex transmission cycles. In a global scenario, leishmaniasis are among the six most neglected diseases. In Brazil, American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) occurs in all Brazilian states, a climate-sensitive disease, affected by changes in rainfall, temperature and humidity.

Objetivo(s)

The study aims to generate future projections of the geographic distribution of Lutzomyia whitmani and to assess the vulnerability of the Brazilian population to the occurrence of ACL in climate change scenarios.

Material e Métodos

To evaluate the ACL surveillance and monitoring model, databases of vector and disease occurrence records were built, associated with environmental data, available at WorldClim (http://www.worldclim.org) and use and coverage data. of the soil (http://www.inpe.br). The application of ecological niche models and the production of projections in climate change scenarios contribute to the knowledge of the ecology of Lutzomyia whitmani in the municipalities of the states of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, São Paulo and Minas Gerais.

Resultados e Conclusão

The use of these projections, in the assessment of municipal vulnerability to ACL transmission is an important product to support the National ACL Control Program and the State and Municipal Health Departments of the Southeast States of Brazil, in the planning of surveillance and control actions, in addition to the availability of the data for its insertion in the National Observatory of Climate and Health, Fiocruz/INPE, which will allow to increase the knowledge about determinants and spatialization of ACL in the State of Rio de Janeiro, as well as in the other states of the Southeast Region.
