Título

The volatile oil of Piper Macedoi Yunck has larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae from insectary and natural breeding

Introdução

The main vector of urban arboviruses, Aedes aegypti, has become a public health problem due to the emergence of resistance to insecticides used to combat this vector. Plants of the Piper genus have shown biological activities against several organisms, suggesting a potential biotechnological application.

Objetivo(s)

In this study, we describe the chemical profile and larvicidal potential of the volatile oil obtained from Piper macedoi against Aedes aegypti larvae.

Material e Métodos

The volatile oil was extracted by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type device, and it analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization detector and gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. A. aegypti larvae obtained from urban breeding sites and insectary were exposed to different concentrations of P. macedoi’s volatile oil.

Resultados e Conclusão

The oil showed 65 substances (monoterpenes:52.62%, sesquiterpenes: 17.96%, arylpropanoids: 27.47%). The main substances were apiole (15.13%), dillapiole (12.34%), 1,8-cineole (14.68%), and camphor (9.15%). After 24h of exposure to P. macedoi’s oil, larvae collected in the urban breeding sites and insectary presented 100% mortality at concentrations between 250-1000 ppm, with LC50 of 105 (95% CI, 53-211) ppm and 196 (95% CI, 87-497) ppm, respectively. The volatile oil has the potential to be a biodegradable alternative, and can generate a new product to control the A. aegypti expansion in face of the increasing resistance to the larvicidal products currently used in Brazil and throughout the world.
