First report of accident caused by Jaguajir agamemnon (C.L. Koch, 1839) (Scorpiones, Buthidae) in Paraná state, Brazil

Objetivos(s)

Here we are reporting a pediatric case unquestionably caused by J. agamemnon in a small city of the state of Paraná, South of Brazil.

Relato do Caso

We describe for the first time a pediatric case of scorpion sting caused by Jaguajir agamemnon. The case occurred in the state of Paraná, being the first record in southern Brazil caused by this species. The patient was attended within 15 minutes with pain, local edema and erythema, whole body pruritus and paresthesia of the tongue in the first two hours, disappearing thereafter. The case was considered mild with a positive outcome and the victim was fully recovered.

Conclusão

In conclusion, cases with J. agamemnon have been rarely reported. In addition to having described the only pediatric case caused by this scorpion it was also the first one outside the northeast region. Although the outcome of our case was positive, more attention should be brought when the victim is a child once moderate envenoming in adults has been reported.

Agradecimentos

The authors would like to express their sincere gratitude to the patient’s parents for sharing accident data and providing the essential photographs for our study.
