Spatial Distribution of Sandflies Vectors of Visceral Leishmaniasis in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Introdução

Leishmaniasis, in the cutaneous and visceral forms are diseases of great epidemiological importance and Brazil is the country with the highest incidence of these diseases, occurring in all Federated Units. About American Visceral Leishmaniasis (AVL), from 2018 to 2022, the Southeast Region of the country had the third highest number of cases, just below the North Region, with the State of Minas Gerais (MG) accounting for almost 70% of the records. The State is the second largest in number of cases in the country, behind only the State of Maranhão.

Objetivo (s)

To observe the panorama of the disease, the spatial distribution of AVL vectors in MG, as well as the analysis of the progression of cases in the municipalities should be analyzed.

Material e Métodos

A bibliographical review of the spatial for Lutzomyia longipalpis and Migonemyia migonei in MG, 2023, was carried out with searches in the Web of Science, Scopus, SciElo, speciesLink, Portal da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and Global Biodiversity Information Facility and for human cases, the database of the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) was used, from 2018 to 2022.

Resultados e Conclusão

Of the 853 of MG, there were record of AVL vectors in 96 (11.3%), with only Lu. longipalpis found in 32 municipalities, Mg. migonei in 35 municipalities and both species in 29. Regarding the notification of autochthonous cases, in the last five years there has been a decrease in the number of cases. From 2018 to 2022, the municipality with the highest number of notifications was Belo Horizonte, followed by Montes Claros in 2018, 2019 and 2022, in these locations the two important vector species were found. In 2020, the municipality of Sete Lagoas supplemented the number of cases in relation to Monte Claros, as well as in 2021 ahead of Ribeirão das Neves and Monte Claros. It is important to highlight that both Lu. longipalpis as Mg. migonei have no record in the municipalities of Sete Lagoas and Ribeirão das Neves. Both Belo Horizonte and Monte Claros are important municipalities in relation to the maintenance of the disease in the State, which a high number of notifications, requiring surveillance and control actions to disease mitigation. Carrying out entomological studies in areas with records of human cases is essential for surveillance, control and prevention of leishmaniasis.
